DETROIT (FOX 2):This is not the first time a famous coney island in Detroit has had to temporarily close to deal with an infestation.

We know:

Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair Razo has announced that the Lafayette Coney Island restaurant in downtown Detroit would temporarily close in order to handle a rat infestation problem.

“As a result, an inspection was completed and Lafayette Coney Island has voluntarily shut-down until all violations are corrected, which includes a plan of action to prevent future violations,” she stated.

Workers will be able to inspect structural problems and clean the eatery during the shutdown. All outside openings may need to be permanently sealed as part of this.

“Our priority is to protect the public’s health and ensure that the establishment meets all safety standards before reopening,” Razo said.

Lafayette Coney Island was closed in 2022.

After that, health inspectors discovered droppings inside, and rat films from within were shared on social media.

According to Lafayette employees, the issue begins when rats from a nearby garden enter the building through two empty spots and then escape through breaches in the basement wall.

Rats were captured on camera by patrons of the famed Lafayette Coney Island eatery.

“I see rats, a mouse, Tom and Jerry,” remarked Dion Hastie, a customer, after seeing the film.

The city’s health department sent inspectors there right away after someone tagged them in the video.
