FOX 2: MACOMB COUNTY, MIAfter a gunshot shatters a kitchen window and lands inches from one man, a family celebration in Macomb County almost devolves into tragedy.

It took place in a suburb of Macomb Township on a Saturday afternoon. The scene of the incident is roughly two and a half miles from a Macomb County Sheriff substation. A 911 call was placed regarding an unexplained window explosion. It became evident what had transpired after around twenty minutes.

At that moment, Heather Schell was upstairs. Gary, her father-in-law, sat in the kitchen and gazed out the window.

“All of a sudden, the whole glass just exploded and shattered, and, I mean, it sounded like a bomb went off in the house,” stated Gary Schell.

Gary was in town. The evening was intended to commemorate a significant occasion: reaching 70 years of age.

“I was going to take all the kids out for a nice dinner for my 70th birthday to celebrate that,” he stated. “It took me 70 years, but I did dodged the bullet.”

Upon closer examination, the wooden blinds might have been the best home décor buy they have ever made. The bullet that broke the double window somehow missed Gary.

“It had the potential to cause far more harm than it did. He answered, “Thank God it didn’t.

“It hit the blinds, and had it not done that, I don t know what the outcome would have been,” Heather said.

“Maybe that deflected the bullet just enough to change its course and have it ricochet away from me,” stated Gary.

However, what about the actual bullet? It was eventually located, though.

“My wife actually found it while she was sweeping up glass,” he explained.

This is where the Macomb County Sheriff’s officers come in, to investigate the origin of that bullet.

“They were wondering if it came from a neighbor’s house, and sure enough, the neighbor came out and saw the police and started talking to him,” he explained.

“He had admitted that he had an accidental discharge of the firearm that he was cleaning,” Heather added.

It was probably an accident, according to the Schells, but they hope that others will use this as a reminder that you can never be too safe when it comes to handling firearms in the home.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office reports that everyone is assisting with the inquiry. The results will be given to the prosecutor’s office after it is finished.
