Major coffee chain closes second store in same state after 30-year-old spot axed weeks earlier

STARBUCKS has closed its downtown San Jose facility at the well-known San Pedro Square, marking yet another closure in California.

On January 5, the popular coffee shop located at 145 W. Santa Clara Street produced its last cup, signaling the end of an era.

Starbucks is a major hit in the neighborhood, even if it still has 50 outlets throughout the city.

Only a few weeks have passed since the Pacific Heights facility in San Francisco closed on December 1, 2024.

Since 1993, the place had been a local mainstay.

It’s not all bad news for downtown coffee enthusiasts.

There are still two Starbucks in the area to enjoy: one at 150 S. First Street and another at E. Santa Clara and 5th Street.

The brand is still widely recognized throughout the city.

Starbucks explains that both of the recent closures are a part of their continuous review of their portfolio of stores, evaluating sustainability and performance.

STARBUCKS STATEMENT

Despite the closure, the coffee giant stressed its dedication to San Jose in a statement to KTVU.

“We value our long-time relationship with the city of San Jose and look forward to our continued participation as part of the community in neighborhoods citywide,” the business stated.

Additionally, they recognized the gravity of such choices, saying, “We do not take the decision to close stores lightly.”

LOOKING FORWARD

Even for well-known companies like Starbucks, the closing emphasizes how the retail and dining industries are changing.

San Pedro Square, a lively neighborhood well-known for its eateries, retail establishments, and nightlife, has long been a busy center.

Regular customers who depended on Starbucks as a convenient place to work remotely or get a drink may find themselves without a place to go if it closes.

However, there are plenty of niche brands and other options nearby for people who need their coffee fix, so the food and beverage scene isn’t slowing down.
