Man arrested after posing as bank employee in attempt to steal $25K from elderly Canton woman
(Canton Police) Li Biao
FOX 2, Canon, Mich. After the victim’s family discovered questionable bank activities, a man who attempted to con an elderly woman is now being charged.
Li Biao, 30, called the 84-year-old victim earlier this month and claimed to be a senior fraud officer with her bank, according to Canton police. Biao allegedly persuaded the victim to take money out of her bank account and deliver it to his colleague, who would then come and collect it from her house over the course of four days.
When Biao showed up at the victim’s house on December 17 to collect $25,000, detectives were already there after the victim’s family had alerted the police.
After falling for a Facebook scam, a father who only wanted to take his son to see the Detroit Lions is now down hundreds of dollars.
Chinese national Biao was arrested and charged with assaulting, resisting, or obstructing police as well as fraudulent false pretenses of between $20,000 and $50,000. Biao is not supposed to be in the United States. He received a cash bond of $100,000.
“This is a tragic example of elder exploitation financial abuse, with the suspect(s) defrauding and stealing from the victim by taking advantage of her vulnerability due to her age,” stated Capt. Joseph Bialy of Canton Support Services. “A sudden change in financial habits, missing funds, unexplained large withdrawals, new beneficiaries on accounts, or a new individual with excessive control over an elderly person’s finances are some warning signs that family members, friends, and caregivers of the elderly should be aware of. They should also report any findings to their local police department.” In this instance, family members alerted the authorities in time to stop the victim from losing more money.
