Man receives $1,000 in toll charges despite trailer being on his property – then he realizes key detail on license plate
After discovering a crucial license plate detail, a driver was perplexed when he was charged $1,000 for toll roads he had never traveled.
The driver believed it to be a simple administrative mistake, but in reality, they found evidence of a horrifying crime.
When Greg Underhill of Clayton, North Carolina, received the large fine from toll collectors in New York, Maryland, and New Jersey, he was baffled.
According to the penalty, he was required to pay the account as his trailer had entered the toll gates without paying.
Photographs of the offending vehicle’s license plate, which matched his trailer’s registration, were included with it.
The sole issue is that, according to Mr. Underhill, his trailer was still on his property when the alleged offenses were committed, and he has never even entered those states, much less driven on their toll roads.

His attempt to file a complaint with the toll company was unsuccessful, according to ABC 11, and the local DMV stated that they had never seen a situation such as this.
To avoid any more expenses, he even turned in his trailer’s tag and reported fraud to the sheriff’s office.
In spite of this, the fines were nonetheless transferred to the collection agencies, and he was assessed late fees totaling $1,000.
He didn’t comprehend what had happened until he contacted the new outlet’s own investigative Troubleshooter, Diane Wilson.
She said that the plate “showed signs of manipulation” in the evidence photos that the toll company had submitted.
Most importantly, the number nine on the plate seemed to have been rounded off by the driver, making it appear to be an eight.
A “ghost plate” is created by this kind of modest alteration, which gives the driver the ability to accrue penalties without consequence and frequently pass them off to an unknown individual.
This can result in credit rating damage, debt collector calls, and fine letters for the unwary victim.
Failure to make payments may even result in a driving prohibition in certain states.
Additionally, the unfortunate target may receive a court summons without even having to drive if the fraudster commits a more serious offense while on the road.
Fortunately, once ABC 11 contacted each agency with their findings, Mr. Underhill was able to have the penalty revoked.
Many of them attested to the fact that the driver who used the modified plate would be charged.
One even claimed that the local police had been tasked with handling the situation.
You should get in touch with the DMV and the police right away to get your plate checked if you think it has been cloned.
