Metro Detroit drivers deal with icy roads ahead of Christmas
With over 50 vehicles spreading salt on the roads throughout the county, the Oakland County Road Commission crews have received a lot of advice from Mother Nature.
DETROIT (FOX 2):Road crews throughout Metro Detroit said that refreezing temperatures are currently their top worry due to the temperatures being at or near freezing. The roads are being salted by them.
It has been slick on the roads. One driver remarked, “People have already started sliding out.” “There does need to be a little bit more salt now.”
The Oakland County Road Commission personnel received the message from Mother Nature, and some of them are utilizing roughly fifty trucks to spread salt on the county’s streets while they wait to see what else could be required. Winter conditions could change, though.
We’re essentially waiting to see what else the weather will do tonight. Road commission spokeswoman Craig Bryson said, “We’ll increase the number of trucks and continue to salt and blade if the temperatures drop and this all turns to solid ice.”
At the Southfield salt dome off Franklin Street close to Northwestern, we observed crew workers setting up their rigs in anticipation of what could be a long night.
“There s enough slush right now, we re using the underbelly plows to scrape that off the road, and we ll continue that all night or as long as needed,” Bryson said. “We get things melted with salt if the temperature drops, and if everything freezes, there could be a lot of ice.” Therefore, we’re going to make an effort to avoid that by staying outside and continuing to apply salt.”
In light of this, drivers we spoke with are reviewing their personal safety tactics.
“Just rise a bit earlier. Go slowly. Don’t drive too fast. Keep the music down and stay in your lane. One driver remarked, “Windows defrost—I don’t know, that’s just what I do.”
