After winning a brand-new Chevy Equinox on Monday night, Leatherwood was overtaken with emotion.

Leatherwood submitted a video to the competition explaining her desire for a car, according to Ewing, founder of Beat the Odds, an organization that has proven successful in lowering street crime. He and Lions defensive end Za Darius Smith were immediately moved by her story.

“I nearly burst into tears. I might cry now, you know,” Smith added. “I’m just kidding, but I’m thrilled for her, guy. Just being able to give this Christmas is a blessing, dude, and it’s all love.”

Smith and Ewing worked together to arrange the car giveaway. It’s all about paying forward, he argues.

“I watched my mom take care of me and my brother. It was just so hard, you know, for her. So, to be able to come here and bless somebody with a car is awesome man,” he said.

Leatherwood was grateful. She cried and gave hugs throughout the night. Not only did she walk away with a new set of keys, but a renewed hope for the holidays.

“Keep hope alive. Keep praying. God is good,” said Leatherwood. “He really is.”
