Metro Detroit weather: Extreme cold persists with double-digit negative wind chills

There will be some snowfall in the late week and wind chills that plummet to over -20 by tomorrow morning.

DETROIT (FOX 2):Metro Detroit is gripped by bone-chilling cold today as dangerously low temperatures set in.

The real temperature this morning was close to zero degrees, but the wind chills made it feel even worse as it dropped to a freezing twelve. As the day goes on, don’t anticipate much warmth. Because of the lingering winds, highs will only reach 6 degrees, and even then, it will feel closer to -9. The biting cold is the true tale, even when a few light snow flurries may dance in the air.

Monroe County, Livingston County, Lapeer County, St. Clair County, Wayne County, Macomb County, Washtenaw County, and Oakland County are all under a Cold Weather Advisory through Wednesday at noon.

With good cause, a cold weather advisory is still in force through Wednesday afternoon. The temperature will drop much more tonight, with lows close to -4. It will feel like -20 degrees when the wind is taken into account. It should come as no surprise that schools in the area will remain closed until Wednesday. Simply said, spending a lot of time outside is too risky.

Observation:

The worst of this Arctic stretch will arrive Wednesday morning, although there will be a little “warm-up” beforehand. Although wind chills will still be about 4, temperatures will rise to roughly 16 degrees by Wednesday afternoon. It’s not nice, but it’s better.

RESOURCE:

On the horizon, Thursday provides some respite. Snow will return, although highs will drop down to a more tolerable 25 degrees. Anticipate an accumulation of no more than an inch; it won’t be significant, but it will dust the roadways.

Metro Detroit will eventually break out of the deep freezing by the weekend. In contrast to this week’s harsh beginning, highs in the 30s will feel practically tropical. After days of unrelenting cold, this is a wonderful change.

The message is unmistakable: keep safe, bundle up, and spend as little time outside as possible. If you’re not prepared, this type of intense cold can be dangerous. Though winter’s icy hold is still strong, warmer days are on the horizon.
