Michigan House GOP protests Dems with no-show over tip wages, family leave issues in lame duck

Republicans held a press conference outside the House chambers today, claiming they were attempting to exert pressure on Democratic House Speaker Joe Tate.

LANSING (FOX 2):House Republicans are making an unusual attempt to compel Democrats to vote on the tip wage issue by boycotting Friday’s parliamentary session.

Before losing control of the House in the new year, the Democrats are trying to pass a number of proposals in lame duck sessions.

The progressive removal of the tip pay has drawn harsh condemnation from the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association.

Republicans held a press conference outside the House chambers today, claiming they were attempting to exert pressure on Democratic House Speaker Joe Tate.

In addition to addressing the minimum wage and family leave issues, they want him to introduce legislation to save tip money for certain workers.

The Democrat speaker has been persuaded to stop the legislation by the UAW president and other unions, which is the only issue.

House Speaker-Elect Matt Hall (R) stated, “Speaker Tate has not shown political courage to step up and do the right things for Michigan workers.” “Instead, you see him focus on things that are not very important.”

Skubick says, “You do understand organized labor has asked him to kill this legislation?”

“I think Speaker Tate, I think he needs to realize organized labor is not on his side,” Hall stated. “I think that it’s put-up or shut-up time.”

Tate blames the Republicans for failing to fulfill their duties. The Michigan Democratic Party, however, referred to it as a “cheap political stunt that is an insult to Michigan taxpayers” and “showing the GOP is more in favor of gridlock, than solving problems.”

Hall says it is time for Democrats to support these workers and quit arguing about other irrelevant topics that could wait. He will not use the word boycott.

“You have restaurant workers across Michigan who are about to lose their jobs, and they’re taking about county commission appointments and creating new commissions and all of these things that could really wait until next year,” Hall stated.

The Democrats were still voting on legislation back on the House floor. Due to the vacant seats, the voting roll call board displays 54 Republican names in white and 56 Democratic names in green.

The entire timeline of minimum wage increases until 2028 was made public by the state. It will increase by this amount during the next four years.

Hall cautions that if the speaker doesn’t budge and give Republicans the vote they desire, delicate negotiations to restore the roads may be abandoned.

“If Speaker Tate does not put up today legislation to move, earn sick leave policies, restaurant worker tip credit, and roads, they’re all dead including roads, everything’s dead.”

And how long are those seats going to be vacant? Excellent query.
