(FOX 2):Beginning in early February, Michigan will once again offer two historic Great Lakes license plates.
The governor of Michigan enacted a statute in 2023 that includes both designs in an effort to return legacy plates to locals.
Overview:
Residents of Michigan who want to give your car a makeover can purchase one of two new license palates starting on February 1.
The original design from the 1970s and 1980s is replicated in the black-on-white and blue-on-white patterns.
In order to obtain the plate, drivers must pay a $55 one-time price, followed by a $10 renewal fee.
They can be applied to vans, pickup trucks, and passenger cars that aren’t being used for business.
What they’re saying:
In her announcement of the plate’s reintroduction on Friday, the secretary of state for Michigan expressed her pride in the state’s status as “the nation’s automotive capital.”
“Many Michiganders have fond memories of these classic plate designs and have been looking forward to them being added to our state’s popular throwback plate selection,” said Jocelyn Benson, the secretary. “Car enthusiasts, collectors and everyday drivers can now put a piece of Michigan’s history back on our roads while they help to fix the roads throughout the state.”
Look more closely:
In recent years, other classic dishes have also made a comeback. Other legacy choices that were later made available to drivers were initiated by Public Act 317.
The secretary of state also received the green Water Wonderland plate and the blue and yellow Water-Winter Wonderland plate, in addition to the two new legacy plates.
A digital version is also available, although it will be phased out in 2026.
And there will soon be even more choices. The Michigan website states that these centenary options commemorate the United States’ 250th birthday.
