Michigan’s ‘Pre-K For All’ program: Taking down the cost barrier for early education

According to educators around the state, eliminating that expense might result in annual savings of up to $10,000. Legislators in Michigan allocated $655 million for the program, making all of this feasible.

DETROIT (FOX 2):Now that the holidays are over, kids will be returning to school.

Meanwhile, a new state-funded initiative in Michigan says there is still opportunity for students to receive an early education.

The “Pre K For All” initiative aims to eliminate the financial barrier to schooling.

According to educators around the state, eliminating that expense might result in annual savings of up to $10,000. Legislators in Michigan allocated $655 million for the program, making all of this feasible.

In terms of early childhood education, Michigan is breaking records. The director of MiLEAP, Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, reports that thousands of students have signed up for the state pre-K program.

“More than 45,000 students were enrolled in the Great Start Readiness Program, which is the state primary pre-K program,” states Walker-Griffea.

Since pre-K is free for all 4-year-olds in Michigan, the Department of Lifelong Education’s MiLEAP officials suggest those figures may be higher.

Teachers from all throughout the state are working to inform families about this opportunity.

“It s backed by research that shows that children who are in a quality pre-K program grow up to be healthier adults, earning higher wages over their lifetime and achieving success,” said Emily Laidlaw, Deputy Director of MiLEAP.

“We re estimating that about $450 million is now staying in our Michigan family s pockets,” Walker-Griffea said.

They are aware of the problems of overcrowded classrooms and a shortage of teachers, as there will be an additional 15,000 or so 4-year-olds in 2024 alone.

According to officials, steps are being taken to resolve those issues as well.

“Utilizing the startup grants to support space and staff in order to make sure that classrooms have what they need to succeed for kids,” stated Laidlaw.

Any family with a child that turned four before December 1, 2024, is eligible for this program.

To enroll in the program, you’ll need a birth certificate, evidence of residency, and a few additional documents.
