Millions of Brits risk injury over Christmas with festive packaging wreaking havoc in homes, research finds

According to study, festive packing is wreaking havoc in households, putting millions of British citizens at risk for harm around Christmas.

An estimated 12 million people have injured themselves as a result of the difficult wrapping, according to a survey of 2,000 adults.

Additionally, 74% of respondents said they become upset when opening packaging, and 64% said it makes them feel less festive.

This means that 64% of people will spend up to two hours fumbling with foil seals and attempting to open securely wrapped plastic or cardboard boxes that are overly sealed up.

Additionally, 26% acknowledged that they had harmed the contents while struggling, and 47% had used scissors or knives out of desperation, hurting themselves in the process.

Among the injuries received were minor cuts (40%) and scratches (32%), as well as bruises (10%).

“Christmas is a time for joy, not frustration,” stated Lydia Butler, a packaging specialist with DS Smith, the company that commissioned the study. “Nobody wants to spend Christmas wrestling with complicated packaging and possibly hurting themselves in the process.”

According to the study, 27% of people have experienced problems or even ended up in A&E because they were hurt trying to open packaging.

Ten percent more people steer clear of purchasing specific items as presents because they are aware that the packaging would be difficult to open.

However, 32% of respondents say that excessive packing is especially annoying during the Christmas season.

Thirty-four percent of people who tried to open broken things over Christmas were unable to present the product as a gift.

According to OnePoll.com data, nearly nine out of ten people (88%) believe that packaging should be simple to open, especially for people who have dexterity problems.

However, 14% of people who have had trouble opening packaging have just returned an item after purchasing it because they were unable to open it.

Additionally, it was shown that nearly half (45%) occasionally experience hand weakness or pain due to carpal tunnel syndrome (11%), arthritis (25%), or injuries (19%).

And 30% of them claim that as a result, they frequently require help opening boxes.

Award-winning author Pippa Stacey, whose chronic illness limits her mobility, stated: I love Christmas, but when I order online, I get packages that are difficult, if not impossible, to open.

Knowing from my own experience that things don’t have to be that way is aggravating. In order to make packaging inclusive for everybody, I hope to see more businesses use the current options.

A representative for the packaging business DS Smith also stated: “Difficult-to-open packaging can be a significant barrier to independence for people with more limited hand mobility—these struggles are often overlooked but are very real.”
