More live-service games apparently CANCELLED days after God of War bombshell

A few years ago, PlayStation announced a pivot to live-service games following the huge popularity of games like Fortnite.

Fortnite’s microtransaction-heavy live-service model makes it one of the most lucrative games in the world.

Many businesses have attempted to follow this trend, however a large number of these games fail or are cancelled.

The introduction of four high-profile live-service games in February 2024—Skull & Bones, Suicide Squad, Foamstars, and Helldivers 2—is a prime example; only the latter was a commercial success.

Two live-service games, including an online God of War game, were recently canceled by PlayStation.

According to Korean media MTN, the Horizon MMO has escaped the chop, but three further live-service games have been canceled.

Most famous for MMOs like Throne and Liberty, South Korean company NCSoft has reportedly canceled several projects.

H was thought to be an MMO based on the Horizon series, and the games codenamed Pantera, H, and J have all been shut down.

Nevertheless, the South Korean reporter clarified in their article that the word H was an outdated codename for the Horizon project.

Another recently aborted game was assigned the codename H, which is now known internally as Project Skyline.

Similar to the agreement with ShiftUp for Stellar Blade, Sony and NCSoft partnered on a Horizon MMO in late 2023.

According to historical job postings and online resumes of NCSoft’s former staff, the Horizon MMO project started in 2021 and employed over 100 individuals in 2023.

It is also said that Unreal Engine 5 was used to create the game, which was intended for both PC and mobile devices.

The collaboration with NCSoft, according to former Sony president Jim Ryan, “promotes our strategy to expand beyond console and broaden PlayStation’s reach to a wider audience.”

These elements all point to NCSoft’s involvement in the Horizon MMO, which has been spared from closure.

NCSoft is apparently not doing well financially, and leadership informed staff that 2025 is a make-or-break year for the company.

The Horizon MMO is a completely separate project from the Horizon live-service game that is currently in development at Guerilla Games.
