More than two million vapers could switch BACK to smoking cigarettes due to Government’s looming crackdown, poll shows
According to surveys, the government’s impending crackdown may drive more than two million vapers to resume smoking cigarettes.
Ministers are limiting flavors to make disposable e-cigarettes less enticing to children, and they plan to outlaw them starting in June.
However, the government’s own impact assessment acknowledges that there are growing concerns that this could lead to former smokers relapsing.
According to a recent study conducted by Opinium for Elfbar, 41% of participants said they would resume smoking tobacco if single-use vapes and their favorite flavors were outlawed.
The study estimates that this amounts to about 2.3 million adult vapers.
About 38% of respondents stated that they would attempt to keep buying disposable vaporizers or flavors that are prohibited from any available channels.
Critics have cautioned about a potential surge in illicit vapes on the underground market.
Although it is unclear which flavors would be targeted by the government’s crackdown, it is anticipated that flavors that are particularly appealing to kids, such as cola and candy floss, will be among them.
According to the Opinium survey, 37% of respondents smoked fruity flavors, with tobacco flavors coming in second at 23%.
Ministers maintain that action is required to curb the rise in vaping among minors.
The Vapes and Tobacco Bill will enable them to restrict certain flavors and enable law enforcement to impose immediate sanctions on vendors who are found to be selling to children.
