New law charging drivers $9 every time they use certain roads goes into effect in weeks – but some car owners pay less
DRIVERS will shell out $9 every time they use some of the busiest roads in New York City thanks to a new law.
The congestion fee crackdown has finally been confirmed after months of delays and debate.
Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed the fee on Thursday after knocking it down from the originally planned $15 toll.
Under the new rule, drivers and motorcyclists will be fined for entering the Congestion Relief Zone, which covers Manhattan south of 60th Street.
The scheme has been slammed by lawmakers like New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, who worries it will unfairly effect commuters.
“I am firmly opposed to any attempt to force through a congestion pricing proposal in the final months of the Biden administration,” he said.
