New York Officer, Deputy Killed in Shooting, Suspect’s Death Confirmed
DEBARYLIFE – In the town of Salina, New York, on Sunday night, a police officer and a sheriff’s deputy were shot and murdered, authorities said.
Both are officers from the Syracuse Police Department and Onondaga County Sheriff Tobias Shelley’s department, WSYR-TV reports. It is unknown what their names are.
Also slain was the suspect.
Authorities in Syracuse reported in a news release that the incident started at approximately 7:07 p.m. on Sunday when they saw a “suspicious vehicle” near Emerson Avenue and Hamilton Street. The driver of the car resisted officers’ attempts to halt it and took off running.
The license plate was recorded even though the officers lost sight of the car. Officers discovered the owner’s Salina residence by looking up the vehicle’s registration.
At the address, the car was discovered parked at a house on Darien Drive by the officers who were accompanied by deputies from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.
According to recent information, the driver of the vehicle may be armed, Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile said during a press conference. For this reason, they requested assistance from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office. “Officers from the city and county arrived at the residence on Darien Drive about the same time.”

There was a gunfight between the deputies and the officers after they encountered an armed individual shortly after they arrived.
“While they were inspecting the vehicle and saw what appeared to be guns inside, they heard what sounded like someone manipulating a firearm from inside the residence,” Cecile recalled. “Moments later, there was an exchange of gunfire between at least one suspect and the officers and deputies.”
The armed suspect, along with one officer and one deputy, were all shot.
The officer, deputy, and suspect were taken to Upstate University Hospital, where all passed away from their wounds.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, as well as with their brothers and sisters in law enforcement who are suffering in the wake of this tragedy,” the sheriff’s office released in a news release.
To search the house, the sheriff’s office needed a warrant as of late Sunday night. According to Shelley, the neighborhood is secure and not directly threatened.
