NFL Hall of Fame controversy after Kansas City Chiefs legend who killed wife in murder-suicide is nominated
The finalists for the upcoming class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame have been revealed.
The Green Bay Packers’ Mike Holmgren and Sterling Sharpe are among the legendary names on the ticket, but there is also one contentious choice.
Jim Tyrer, the notorious left tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs, is listed in the Seniors category.
Tyrer made the 1960s All-Decade squad and was a six-time All-Pro.
He stood up for the blind side of quarterback Len Dawson.
Before retiring in 1974, Tyrer won three AFL championships and one Super Bowl with the Chiefs.

When he retired, he was a sure bet to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
All other non-specialist players who qualified for the Hall of Fame and had six All-Pro selections are in.
But in 1980, Tyrer murdered and killed his wife in a murder-suicide after being selected as a contender for the first time.
Following his playing career, Tyrer experienced melancholy and excruciating headaches, which specialists speculate may have been caused by CTE.
After that occurrence, he was eventually not elected into the Hall of Fame and has not been on the ballot ever since.
Tyrer’s son, Brad, and a physician who treated him have spoken up for him since he was removed from the ballot.
They assert that his football career was the cause of the murder-suicide.
“If it has webbed feet, walks like a duck, quacks, and water goes off its back, it’s not a zebra: It’s CTE,” Tyrer’s physician, Doug Paone, told the Kansas City Star in 2020.
“[Tyrer] would be the poster child for CTE.”
Brad revealed that his father had never been upset until he began to have mental health problems.
“My dad was just a great guy, an all-around great guy; he didn’t cuss, he didn’t drink, you never saw him raise his voice at my mom, ever,” Brad stated in 2020.
