In Southeast Michigan and around the United States, norovirus outbreaks are on the rise. Family doctor Dr. Asha Shajahan of Corewell Health East gave an explanation for the increase.
“So the norovirus is really common in the winter months because people tend to gather inside,” she explained. “It s highly infectious.”
The illness can spread swiftly from Christmas dinner to that New Year’s Eve party.
“The stomach flu, sometimes known as norovirus, is not a flu at all. Since the virus is gastrointestinal in nature, it produces inflammation of the intestinal lining, which results in the severe symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea,” she explained.
Keep in mind that hand sanitizer won’t aid you while you try to prevent getting the norovirus.
“Just make sure you wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds, because the Norovirus is not that susceptible to just hand sanitizer, so you want to make sure you wash your hands with soap and water,” stated Shajahan.
The good news is that the majority of patients get better in one to three days.
However, experts advise staying at home if you experience any symptoms at all in order to stop the infection from spreading.
