While the suspects are being held, two children who were allegedly kidnapped from the house have been found and are safe.

Investigators believe that Jennifer Lyn Bernhard, 48, and Stevie Ray Smith, 74, of Northfield Township, were killed when officers arrived at a residence on Nollar Bend Drive just after 8:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

Jeffrey Alan Bernhard, 52, of Northfield Township, is the third casualty; he is still in the hospital and has been placed in stable condition.

“When we arrived, we found two adults dead in the house and another adult with gunshot wounds,” stated Lt. David Powell of the Northfield Township police.

“We are heartbroken for Jeff and his family and are aware of these terrible incidents. We offer our sincerest sympathies for this unfathomable loss.

At first, police reported that two children, aged four and seven, had been taken from the home. They have no relation to one another. Neighbors claim one is a foster child, but police will not verify the information.

Throughout the evening, police worked, recovering the children and apprehending three individuals.

Neighbor Lee Maulbetsch stated, “Those people were caring for foster children, which saddens me for humanity.”
