NYC Man Receives Sentence For Fatally Injuring Baby Over Video Game Crying: DA

DEBARYLIFE – The Brooklyn man admitted to killing his girlfriend’s young daughter as he was playing video games, and the district attorney said that he was sentenced to up to ten years in jail.

As per the DA’s office, on June 22, 2021, Ricardo Price was caring for 4-month-old Royalty Kemp in his residence on Lewis Avenue in Bed-Stuy, following the girl’s mother’s overnight departure. According to an investigation, Royalty began to cry when she was nestled in the 26-year-old Price’s lap.

Then Price, who was playing a video game, started shaking his leg a lot to try to stop her from sobbing. As Price did so, the baby repeatedly bounced off his knee, and the investigation discovered that her head struck the controller he was holding.

Based on the investigation, the mother of the small kid returned the following day and discovered her daughter was drowsy, not eating, and had passed out later that afternoon.

Upon arriving at Woodhull Medical Center with her daughter, the mother discovered that Royalty had a fractured skull. On July 2, the baby passed away at Bellevue Hospital after being moved there.

The autopsy conducted by the medical examiner’s office in New York City revealed that Royalty passed away due to violent head trauma resulting in multiple injuries, such as fractures to the skull accompanying internal bleeding to the brain and spinal cord.

On April 12, 2024, Price entered a guilty plea to second-degree manslaughter charges. He might spend up to 10 years in prison after receiving a sentence of at least 40 months on Friday.

“The defendant received Royalty Kemp as a priceless baby from her mother. Eric Gonzalez, the district attorney for Brooklyn, said, “Instead of making sure the infant was protected, he crushed her skull to such a severe degree that she passed away.

“Our hearts continue to be with the child’s mother and loved ones as they grieve her tragic loss.”
