Officials remind people to stay off the ice after ice rescue in Riverview
Leave the ice rescues to the experts of the field.
FOX 2, Riverview, Mich.Residents of Riverview are being cautioned by officials to avoid the ice during an ice rescue.
Ice may not be as thick as it looks because temperatures are rising around Metro Detroit.
According to Lt. Gary Wiegand of the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division, “I know ice fishermen like to get out on the ice as soon as possible to catch those fish and kids like to get out and play hockey.”
Before you go out on the ice, there are a number of things to think about, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
“The stance of the Macomb County Sheriff s Office is no ice is safe ice – you always have to be very careful when you re doing any kind of recreational activity on the ice,” he stated. “On a lake like Lake St. Claire, you want to pay close attention to the present temperature, water depth, and wind direction. We had eight, ten, or twelve feet of ice drifting off the coast due to last week’s lower weather, but that ice swiftly melted away as the wind direction shifted and the weekend brought some rain and slightly warmer temperatures.”
Leave the ice rescues to the experts of the field.
“It is not a good idea if you see someone fall through the ice or even a pet, to traverse the ice yourself – if that person or pet fell through the ice, you can be assured you re going to fall, through the ice also,” he stated. “The frigid water temperatures will rob the body of heat much quicker than just the air, so falling through the ice, falling into the water, you re going to get hypothermic extremely fast, so a person will not have much time.”
The prediction comes from Rich Luterman.
