(FOX 2):The White House signed an executive order halting all federal funding less than a day later, leaving many unsure of which programs would be impacted and who would lose funds.

Lawsuits flooded in amid the uncertainty, and a federal court halted the proceedings before rescinding the decision.

Local viewpoint:

Dr. Nikolai Viti, the administrator of Detroit Public Schools, was among those who had inquiries following the announcement of the directive.

“How does pausing federal funding for school meals for disadvantaged children or programming for special needs children make America great again?” he said on X, a social network. “Don’t create chaos.”

The halt affected more than just Detroit’s schools. Following the announcement of the executive order, Medicaid services were discontinued.

Many people were left wondering what else might come and why the executive office backed off the directive when President Donald Trump reversed it.

“My hunch is that the administration did not like how many areas were being impacted,” stated Dave Dulio.

Despite a frenzy of action in the first week of Trump’s administration, Dulio, a professor of political science at Oakland University, isn’t shocked by the way things have turned out.

“I don t think anyone should be surprised,” he replied. “He s doing exactly what he said he was going to do when he was running.”

Larger issues are also being raised, such as whether the president may regulate the financial strings that Congress often uses as leverage.

The “power of the purse” is what the legislative branch is known for. However, Dulio asserts that presidents do have some influence over how they allocate funds.

“Presidents do have some (authority) and it’s always the question is how far and where is the line, right?” replied Dulio. “Presidents have some flexibility in how appropriated monies are spent.”
