Paralysis in Lansing as Michigan Democrats’ crammed agenda comes to a halt
The mayhem reverberating through the state capital’s corridors could be the culmination of a period of inaction that has angered some Democrats who are angry with leader Joe Tate.
FOX 2, Lansing, Mich.Dissatisfaction with priorities and the Michigan House Speaker has crippled any possibility of additional lawmaking in Lansing due to protesting Republicans, absent Democrats, and a significant legislative deadlock.
The mayhem reverberating through the state capital’s corridors could be the culmination of a period of inaction that has angered some Democrats who are angry with leader Joe Tate.
“We’re not coming in because of this. The backward priorities are insane,” Republican Matt Hall, who will take over as chamber leader, said.
For the second time this week, Hall led Republicans in a walkout over Democratic legislation. Instead, they voiced their complaints from The Nuthouse, a nearby sports bar, where they usually sit on the right side of the aisle.
However, Tate had problems within his own party even without Republicans after Rep. Karen Whitsett of Detroit stayed at home and told the speaker that she would not go back to the Michigan House until he gave local districts more funding.
Because Whitsett was not present, Democrats lacked a quorum of lawmakers, which prevented them from passing any more legislation.
Issues also arose in the Michigan Senate, when Sen. Sylvia Santana boycotted the meeting because she believes Democrats are not paying enough attention to urban issues.
She left the other half of the government paralyzed since she didn’t get her 20th vote.
The Attorney General of Michigan charged lawmakers who did not appear with violating the law. Hall retaliated by charging Dana Nessel with excessive expenditures.
“That budget is going to be closely examined. “Her department office is completely out of control,” Hall remarked.
The Democratic governor has threatened to stop signing any more bills unless she receives a road repair plan or economic development schemes.
