DETROIT (FOX 2):At a preschool on the west side of Detroit, parents and one instructor report that the building’s heating system isn’t functioning properly, forcing youngsters to leave the classroom.
Martin Luther King Jr. Education Center Academy officials denied the idea, claiming that the building had been inspected in January and that the heat was on inside.
However, parents claim that since before Christmas, the heat has been turned off. Some claim they simply want answers from the administration, while others are angry about the freezing temperatures inside.
Local viewpoint:
Parents took action and pulled their children from school after one instructor, Ms. Motley, said that students were “freezing” inside the building.
“Their parents have been pulling them out of school and picking them up all week long,” she continued.
Inside MLK Academy, a preschool on Detroit’s west side, parents like Natalya Martin report that their children have been dressed in blankets and jackets. This problem has persisted for weeks.
“Probably around the first or second week of December and they thought it was going to be fixed during the break and they came back and it’s not fixed,” Martin added.
Another parent claimed that when her husband sought clarification, the management informed him that they were unaware that the heat was a problem within the building.
One room upstairs had minor issues, but nothing more, according to a building caretaker.
Zoom Out:
With snow and freezing temperatures prevalent throughout much of January, the new year has gotten off to an unusually frigid start.
The Wayne Regional Educational Service Agency, the school’s funding source, promised to check MLK Jr. Education Center Academy to make sure the heat was on.
It acknowledged in a statement that the classrooms were warm at the moment.
“Their heating system was also inspected on Jan. 10 and is working properly,” Wayne RESA said in a statement from Dana Chicklas.
Parents, however, are dubious and prefer an in-person meeting.
“Speak with the parents and let them know. Another parent, Jessica, remarked, “Let’s meet. Talk about what’s actually happening. And who should we contact if parents may assist as well?
