Paul Dickenson dead at 74: BBC commentator who covered Jessica Ennis-Hill’s iconic gold at London 2012 dies
PRIOR Paul Dickenson, a BBC Sport pundit, died at the age of 74.
Dickenson, who spent more than 20 years specializing in winter sports and athletics, passed away at home on Tuesday.
On Wednesday night, the BBC confirmed his death.
Social media was used by fans to honor the man with the recognizable voice.
“Very sad to learn of Paul Dickenson’s passing,” one user commented. His voice is much missed; he was one of my all-time favorite commentators.
Another said: “I just learned of Paul Dickenson’s passing, which is really sad.
“Having grown up listening to him, it took me a while to pluck up the courage to talk to him when I was first starting out but, once I did, he was always very supportive and just great company.”
From 1992 until 2014, Dickenson provided commentary on each Olympic Summer and Winter Games.
Only five BBC commentators have predicted Team GB to win gold at both the Summer and Winter Olympics, including him.
He offered commentary on the historic gold medal won by Jessica Ennis-Hill in the 2012 Olympic heptathlon.
