Plot to assassinate Pope Francis with suicide bomb in Iraq foiled by British spies

During Pope Francis’s visit to Iraq, British agents stopped a suicide bombing attempt.

Plans to assassinate the Pope while on the trip were leaked to the Iraqi government by UK intelligence services.

In an excerpt from his upcoming memoir, Hope, which will be published next year, the Pope disclosed the episode.

He claimed that upon his arrival in Baghdad, they had been informed that a woman had been traveling to Mosul while wearing a suicide vest with the intention of taking her own life during the pope visit.

In the same direction, with the same objective, a truck loaded with explosives was found.

Due to security concerns and the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, his visit to Iraq was the first by a pope and was fraught with danger.

They had been intercepted and detonated by the Iraqi police.
