What they’re saying:

The suspect, 61-year-old Damon Napier, was taken into custody for trafficking two women in metro Detroit, according to Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard. Macomb and Oakland Counties were the sites of both incidents.

According to police, Napier had a criminal history dating back years in California and Michigan that included drug usage and kidnapping, which is a typical element of human trafficking, according to Bouchard, because drugs are used to manipulate victims.

This case resulted from a 2023 Madison Heights missing person investigation that found Napier was a drug dealer who became friends with the victim.

According to the police, several victims have been identified, but they think there may be more.

“It is a crime that does not have a particular victim,” stated Bouchard.

The new Oakland County Human Trafficking Taskforce is responsible for the first arrest. According to the sheriff, the taskforce is a collaborative endeavor between the community and law enforcement.

By knowing the symptoms and indicators, people can keep an eye out for indications of human trafficking. Call the authorities if you witness someone acting cowardly, obedient, unable to move around alone, or lacking their own identification.

Because everything is done under the surface, police believe it is difficult to pinpoint the exact number of trafficking cases in Michigan. Authorities stated that they are aware of its size and that the cartels are deeply involved in cross-border trafficking.

Sometimes they are trafficked in or domestically cultivated.
