Report: Pistons’ Jaden Ivey broke left leg in scary fall during Magic win

DETROIT, MICHIGAN – JANUARY 01: On January 1, 2025, in Detroit, the Detroit Pistons’ #23 Jaden Ivey reacts to getting hurt in the fourth quarter while playing the Orlando Magic at Little Caesars Arena next to #28 Isaiah Stewart and #2 Cade Cunningham.

DETROIT (AP) — According to an ESPN report, guard Jaden Ivey of the Detroit Pistons shattered his left leg in a collision during a victory over the Orlando Magic.

Ivey added a message for his followers to a social media post he posted with the news.

Ivey added, “I promise to come back even better,” in a post. “The recovery starts now #DetroitBasketball.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Pistons had yet to release an update on Ivey’s status.

In 2022, Ivey, a former Purdue standout, was selected by Detroit with the fifth overall pick. In 30 games this season, Ivey averaged 17.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and four assists—both career highs.

As he and Ivey lunged for the ball, Orlando’s Cole Anthony stumbled and collapsed, injuring him. Ivey was knocked to the ground after Anthony’s momentum pushed him onto his planted leg. Ivey, 22, was clearly distressed as he reached for his shin, and the team’s medical personnel promptly helped him.

Players from both teams surrounded him in a circle while members of the training staff held up towels to hide the injury from the spectators. After a long wait, he was wheeled out of the arena with a towel covering his injury and loaded onto a stretcher.

Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff remarked, “It is tough for all of us,” following Detroit’s 105-96 victory. “There s no better person or teammate than J.I. and no one cares more about this than he does.”
