Republican Voters Favor DeSantis as Trump’s VP Pick, Poll Reveals

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has emerged as the top choice for Vice President among Republican voters if Donald Trump secures the GOP nomination, according to a recent poll by The Economist and YouGov.

Despite DeSantis’s consistent denials of any interest in the position, 41% of Republicans and 40% of self-proclaimed conservatives view him as a favorable running mate for Trump.

The poll, conducted between June 9 and June 11, reveals that Republican voters have seemingly moved past the contentious exchanges between Trump and DeSantis during the primary season.

Instead, they are showing strong support for the Florida Governor as Trump’s potential second-in-command.

Interestingly, DeSantis outpaces another prominent Floridian, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, in the preferences of Republican voters. Rubio garners 27% support from Republicans and 26% from conservatives, trailing behind DeSantis.

This preference highlights the significant influence DeSantis holds within the party, despite his explicit statements of disinterest in the Vice Presidential role.

DeSantis has been clear about his stance on the matter. In an interview with Outkick last year, he expressed his lack of enthusiasm for the Vice President position.

“Would you take it if it were offered to you? I don’t think I would be good at it and I think I’m probably, you know, more valuable doing other things,” he stated, adding that “doing No. 2” just “doesn’t appeal” to him.

According to the source, he further emphasized that his political ambitions do not align with seeking a Cabinet position or a TV contributorship, unlike some other candidates.

In February, DeSantis also commented on Trump’s potential choices for a running mate, suggesting that focusing on identity politics would be a mistake.

“I have heard that they’re looking more into identity politics. I think that’s a mistake,” he said during a call with supporters from his now-suspended campaign.

The possibility of a DeSantis nomination for VP also raises concerns about electoral college complications, as both the presidential and vice presidential nominees would be from the same state.

This issue could create logistical challenges for the campaign.

Despite these factors, the poll results clearly indicate that Republican voters favor DeSantis as a strong candidate to complement Trump on the ticket.

This preference underscores the Governor’s popularity and the significant role he plays within the GOP landscape.

As the 2024 election season progresses, it will be interesting to see how these dynamics unfold and whether DeSantis’s firm stance against accepting the Vice Presidential role will influence voter sentiment and the ultimate decision-making process within the party.
