Sam’s Club eliminates checkout option as CEO praises ‘bold’ move to make customers ‘exit faster’

A major checkout adjustment has been implemented at one of SAM’S Club’s new locations.

The warehouse retailers said that the change would make it easier for customers to pay and leave the store.

Walmart, the company that owns Sam’s Club, has been testing and modifying both traditional and self-checkout sections in recent years.

This year, customers have noticed that the majority of Walmart stores have self-checkout machines operating and relatively few cashiers.

The same is true for Sam’s Club, and although some consumers are concerned about this, Walmart CEO Doug McMillion has stated in a recent earnings call that the company will be moving far away from traditional checkouts.

McMillion pointed out that there are no conventional checkouts at the recently completed Sam’s Club in Grapevine, Texas, which is roughly 22 miles northwest of downtown Dallas.

I tried Sam’s Club for first time – it was chaotic but saved me tons of cash

An AI technology update that automatically checks receipts when customers leave the Sam’s Club location made this possible.

It eliminates the need for customers to pause and have it inspected by staff members and was introduced at 120 locations in April.

“Boldly, our Sam’s team also eliminated traditional checkouts, so our members can use Scan & Go and the new computer vision exit technology to exit the club faster,” he told investors.

“Just imagine a 150,000 square-foot Sam’s Club with no traditional checkouts.”

Walmart and Sam’s Club officials are optimistic about Scan & Go’s potential to cut down on long lineups and make it easier for customers to pay for goods, according to McMillion’s remarks.

BONUS FEATURE

Members of Sam’s Club and Walmart+ who have the mobile applications for both chains can use the Scan & Go feature.

Customers can use the Scan & Go app to scan products as they add them to their shopping basket.

As a result, each item is given a unique barcode that can be read at the self-checkout kiosk.

Customers can leave with their goods after receiving a brief confirmation from a Sam’s Club or Walmart staff in the area.

Naturally, this aspect would not occur with the Sam’s Club AIexit technology.

What is Walmart’s Scan and Go?

Walmart created Scan and Go to help customers save time.

The purpose of Walmart’s Scan and Go technology is to enable customers to scan products while they buy, pay, and depart without having to wait in lengthy checkout lines.

The retailer breaks down the new system into a few simple steps:

  • Customers first need to have the Walmart app downloaded on their phones with their location access enabled.
  • On the Store Mode landing page, shoppers must click the Scan and Go option.
  • Customers can scan each item and place them in their carts as they shop.
  • At the end, they’ll be prompted to view the cart to make sure the quantity on the app matches the ones in their carts.
  • Shoppers will press “Check Out” and head to a self-checkout kiosk.
  • They’ll be prompted to scan the provided QR code at the register and confirm their payment method.
  • Once the transaction is complete, shoppers can leave the store without worry.

Customers can save time and effort by using this function to scan each item at the kiosk, and it also keeps large queues from forming because of how long that process usually takes.

Walmart isn’t quite there yet, but Sam’s Club may be planning to do away with cashier checkouts in future retail locations.

WALMART WOES

In an effort to streamline the process, the retail behemoth offered managers at a few locations the option to disable specific self-checkout terminals for Spark drivers and Walmart+ members earlier this year.

Theoretically, it would enable Walmart+ members to maximize their $98 yearly membership price and enjoy all of Scan & Go’s advantages.

Regular customers complained that the self-checkout lines were even longer than they had been before, with some locations purportedly blocking at least 60% of member self-checkouts.

Additionally, Walmart has experimented with limiting self-checkout facilities to no more than 15 items at select locations.

There has also been a lot of backlash to this, with some people saying that when all cashier lanes were closed for the day, their local shop left consumers with over 15 items without a place to check out.
