Sheriff admonishes Michigan’s criminal justice system after deadly Christmas Eve shooting

The “criminal justice system has run off the rails again” in Michigan, according to Michael Bouchard, after a violent parolee got a pistol and attacked multiple individuals who attempted to assist him.

(FOX 2):The sheriff is urging the legislature to bolster its jail legislation five days after the horrific incident in northern Oakland County left one person dead, two others wounded by gunshots, and numerous others injured after approaching the culprit.

The “criminal justice system has run off the rails again” in Michigan, according to Michael Bouchard, after a violent parolee got a pistol and attacked multiple individuals who attempted to assist him.

Prison time isn’t the solution, according to Bouchard, even though nonviolent offenders deserve some sort of penalty.

“But people that have a violent history or commit a violent act, or are carrying or using a weapon illegally need serious penalties,” he stated on Monday.

Malik Webb, 29, of Flint, is the most recent example of a violent person committing crimes.

Before being arrested, he shot a mother and daughter, then a third guy, hitting all three.

Webb had been charged with seven weapons violations over nine years before to the Christmas Eve shooting. He had time remaining to serve after being granted release in July when he started killing people at random.

“Had they not made that choice to let him out, he wouldn’t be in a position to shoot people on Christmas Eve,” Bouchard stated.

The Oakland County Sheriff expressed confidence that a set of proposals aimed at reforming the criminal justice system will be improved by the upcoming legislature. He compared the state of Michigan’s prisons today to a time in the early 1990s when a string of violent crimes prompted criticism of the state’s parole board.

Shooting timeline

Bouchard described Webb’s shooting as “incredibly random and another punch in the gut” for a community that had already experienced widespread violence.

According to reports, Webb hit a pole near Oxford while returning from a Christmas party in Rochester. The sheriff stated that it occurred at approximately 6:21 p.m.

He drove forward and hit the pole once more as he backed up. At that moment, Webb pointed a firearm at two people in a nearby parking lot who had come over to check on him.

Deputies then received a second complaint of a car crash in a ditch close to Oxford’s Ray Road at 6:30 p.m.

The third victim, who had stopped to seek assistance, was identified. Rather, Webb carjacked her after pointing a gun at her. But he struggled to shift the car into gear and then left it.

A woman later identified as Dr. Barbara Wolf, 71, was with her daughter around 6:32 p.m. and inquired if he needed assistance. Rather, Webb repeatedly shot her.

While calling 911, her daughter was shot as well.

Shortly thereafter, another motorist stopped to provide assistance, and Webb attempted to carjack him as well. The man instead took off in his pickup vehicle.

According to reports, Webb shot the escaping driver, hitting him in the arm.

At 6:34 p.m., the first deputy arrived and found Webb in the street brandishing his firearm. Shortly thereafter, he was arrested.
