Singer, 20, dies after ‘neck-twisting massage left her with brain swelling’ as doctors warn against dangerous treatment

Following months of neck agony from receiving a massage, a POP singer passed away.

In Udon Thani, northeast of Bangkok, Thailand, Ping Chayada, 20, was paralyzed following a series of neck-twisting massages that started on October 5.

The procedure had left her immobile, and two days later she began to experience odd agony.

After visiting a massage parlor for persistent shoulder and neck pain, Chayada received three sessions.

However, she took medication to relieve the ache in her neck 48 hours later, which she thought was usual.

She went back to the parlor for another massage a week after she began to notice numbness in her arm.

After two weeks, she was unable to lie down due to the stiffening of her body.

A third massage, performed by a different therapist, was given to Chayada.

She soon began to experience numbness in her right leg, along with tingling and itching in her fingers.

She eventually sought treatment for her neck pain at a hospital on October 30 and was prescribed medication.

When Chayada was admitted to the hospital on November 6, she was unable to move her limbs due to excruciating neck and leg discomfort.

She revealed what had transpired on this day on her Facebook page, which has 22,000 followers.

Chayada provided a picture of an x-ray that demonstrated the harm to her neck.

“My symptoms were normal the first time I got a massage,” she wrote.

The same therapist in the same room gave me another massage, this time twisting my neck.

Two weeks later, I began to experience such intense agony that I was unable to lie on my stomach or back.

Since I was a young child, I have been learning massage techniques. I enjoy massages a lot.I assumed this type of body ache was just another massage side effect.

I went again, she added. However, it remained swelled and bruised for a week after this new person’s intense massage.

Following that, I constantly took medication to alleviate the discomfort. My fingertips began to tingle with electricity.

After the third massage, I discovered that my right side was numb.

Two more weeks later, I was unable to raise my right arm.

According to NeedToKnow, Chayada disclosed that she could no longer use half of her body at this time.

“I want to leave this as a lesson for anyone who really enjoys massage,” she continued.

I’ll get better. I’m hurting so much. Now I want to go to work. I’m simply waiting for the appropriate moment now, though.

Upon examination, it was discovered that she had transverse myelitis, a neurological condition brought on by an inflammatory spinal cord.

After taking further medication, Chayada recovered and was released on November 11.

However, she experienced a seizure and increased physical stiffness on November 18, which led to her being sent to the hospital.

After being moved to an intensive care unit on November 22, Chayada quickly fell into a coma.

DOCTOR’S WARNING

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, Chayada passed away on December 8 from septicemia, a potentially fatal infection brought on by bacteria that enters the bloodstream and spreads throughout the body.

Since then, the provincial health chief has said that in order to ascertain the circumstances surrounding her death, an autopsy is necessary.

He further mentioned that the parlor employed seven licensed masseuses.

Because of concerns that the massage did not follow the proper protocol for traditional Thai massage, authorities are looking into the parlor.

Chayada has just made her debut in Thailand under the modest Guitar Records label.

According to Chantakan, her daughter has always enjoyed singing and aspired to be a famous person.

The risks of neck-twisting massages were cautioned by Professor Dr. Thiravat Hamachudha, an advisor to Rangsit University’s College of Oriental Medicine in Lak Hok, Thailand.

The “risk of harm to the blood vessel walls that supply the brain, especially the back, tearing and causing brain tissue death, hemiplegia, paralysis,” Dr. Hamachudha told the Bangkok Post, might be increased if the massages are performed incorrectly.

“The danger will increase in tandem with the force of the twisting, flicking, or circling one’s head,” he stated.
