Southeast Michigan Winter Weather Advisory: Several inches of snow expected to start Christmas week

Snow hits this afternoon and lasts through the evening, but Monday begins dry. Most of southeast Michigan is predicted to receive 1-3 inches of precipitation, with communities further downriver perhaps receiving less due to mixed precipitation.

DETROIT (FOX 2):We have snow if you’re looking for it this holiday week!

First things first: Don’t start your Monday off cold. After single-digit temperatures and freezing wind chills over the weekend, temperatures are now in the 20s. Though it will still be chilly enough for snow, a southerly breeze today begins a warming trend, with highs approaching 35, which is seasonal.

How much snow to expect

Lapeer, Oakland, Livingston, Macomb, and St. Clair Counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory that will be in place from midday to one in the morning on Tuesday.

The most snow will accumulate north of M-46. That area, which is close to the Thumb, might receive two to four inches of snow, while areas close to Flint could receive one to three inches.

Around 1 p.m., snow is predicted to begin to fall in the Detroit region. One to two inches are anticipated in Metro Detroit. Downriver, mixing (freezing rain and sleet) is predicted, which may result in a little less snow accumulation.

Washtenaw County, which is under a Winter Weather Advisory from 2 to 10 p.m., may see a lot of ice.

Anything that falls will stay there because overnight lows are still below freezing. Although there may be some light snowfall on Tuesday morning, the precipitation ends overnight.

After Christmas, it was mostly dry, although the warm-up persisted. Friday highs will be close to 44 and 50 degrees, and there will be rain during the weekend.
