Southfield resident arrested after crashing car into Berkley home during police chase

FOX 2: BERKLEY, Mich.During a police pursuit on Sunday, a Southfield man crashed his car into a house and is now in jail.

According to Berkley police, they tried to stop a white Dodge Journey on January 19 close to Edwards and Greenfield. The driver, a 31-year-old Southfield resident, was allegedly operating a vehicle without insurance and had an outstanding warrant.

Police said that the driver failed to stop and fled, sparking a pursuit throughout Metro Detroit.

The chase proceeded south into Oak Park, east on Lincoln toward Coolidge, then through Huntington Woods before heading back to Berkley, according to officials.

After that, the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a house. The driver is seen fleeing from the police after climbing out of the passenger side window in the footage that Berkley police shared to Facebook. According to the police, he was taken into custody shortly after the collision.

Investigators said the suspect may have been driving under the influence of narcotics when they discovered that he was in possession of cocaine and psilocybin mushrooms.

  • Fleeing and Eluding (5-year felony)

  • Possession of Cocaine (4-year felony)

  • Resisting/Obstructing a Police Officer (2-year felony)

  • Possession of Psilocybin Mushrooms (1 yr Misd.)

  • Operating Under the Influence of Narcotics (93 day Misd.)

According to police, the defendant had many pending felony charges for theft and drug trafficking from Georgia and Michigan.

The collision did not injure anyone.

Police in Berkley say they will help anyone whose homes were damaged in the collision.

There is an investigation going on.
