(FOX 2)-will restore a closed assembly factory in Illinois and produce the next generation of the Dodge Durango in Detroit, according to a letter delivered to members by the company’s leadership on Wednesday.

The statement, which comes after months of talks with the manufacturer that had come to light last year due to claims that Stellantis was not honoring its agreement with the UAW, is a victory for the United Auto Workers Union.

What they’re saying:

On January 22, a message to UAW members asserted that it had “won back thousands of UAW jobs.”

“The strength of workers banding together and holding a billion-dollar company responsible is demonstrated by this triumph. In the email, UAW President Shawn Fain expressed gratitude to the thousands of members and leaders that participated in rallies, marches, grievance filings, and conversations with coworkers.

Fain described the update as a “game-changer,” but he also said that more needed to be done to “reverse the damage done” by Carlos Tavares, the former CEO of the manufacturer.

The move was also praised by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who said it was bringing manufacturing back to Michigan.

“I look forward to working with the UAW, our auto manufacturers and suppliers, and President Trump to keep creating and supporting good-paying American jobs,” she stated.

Overview:

Stellantis has agreed to revive the Belvidere Assembly Plant in 2027 and produce their next Dodge Durango at their Detroit Assembly Complex.

At the Illinois facility, a new midsize truck will be constructed.

Additionally, a “significant investment” is planned to construct Stellantis’ new GME-T EVO engine in 2026 at the Kokomo engine facility in Indiana. According to the UAW, plans to relocate work outside of the United States have been reversed.

Additionally, the Toledo Machining Plant will be producing more.

He claimed in September 2024 that the corporation had not upheld the collective bargaining agreement they had made after a union-wide walkout the previous year.

When Stellantis shut down the Belvidere Plant and seemed to stop construction on the Durango in Detroit, Fain accused the company of breaking the agreement.

Stellantis is against the UAW, accusing it of breaching a contract as well, according to the UAW leadership from members.

It was hardly the only problem Stellantis had. Falling sales and a troubled CEO who was ultimately fired were other issues from the previous year.
