Super Bowl champion’s bid to unretire and make NFL comeback halted by little-known rule and Miami Dolphins stance

A little-known rule has prevented a SUPER BOWL champion from unretiring and returning to the NFL.

This season, the Miami Dolphins have placed 32-year-old Shaq Barrett on their reserve/retirement list.

However, the Dolphins have not chosen to cut the linebacker from the list.

This means that after retiring from the NFL in July, he will not be playing this season.

Barrett is unable to sign with another team, though, because a payer cannot retire and then become a free agency.

He inked a new one-year contract with the Dolphins in March, so the team will hold his rights through 2025.

According to reports, the Dolphins have no plans to cut him loose and let him sign with another team, therefore he will remain retired.

Barrett has asked to play in the NFL again in order to further his career.

However, the request took head coach Mike McDaniel by surprise.

“The team relies on me to concentrate on the Packers,” he stated.

“We’ll work on that when I meet with Chris [Grier], the general manager.

“There are numerous roster and team implications to take into account.”

However, it seems that Barrett will not be on the roster for the remainder of the season.

After going undrafted out of Colorado State in 2015, the linebacker had a career filled with ups and downs.

He did, however, go on to win two Super Bowl championships, the first with the 2015 Denver Broncos.

The 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers were his second.

In 2019, Barrett had his best season, leading the league in sacks (19.5), setting a Buccaneers record.

He was regarded as one of the NFL’s most dynamic pass rushers and recorded 59 career sacks.
