Surveillance Footage: Florida Man Seen Leaving Missing Wife’s Madrid Apartment With Suitcase, Reports Say
David Knezevich, a Florida man suspected of kidnapping his estranged wife while she was in Spain, allegedly left her apartment complex with what seemed to be a bag on the evening she vanished in February, according to federal court filings.
Ana Maria Knezevich, 40, was last seen entering her Madrid apartment building at approximately 2:20 p.m. on February 2. Hours later, security cameras captured a guy who resembled Knezevic, dressed in a motorcycle helmet, entering the building about 9:30 p.m. with a can of spray paint, “which he used to disable” a surveillance camera, according to an FBI agent in an affidavit.
“The lens was not completely obscured, and the male is seen fastening a piece of duct tape to the lock of the building entrance to prevent the lock from engaging to allow subsequent entry,” according to the statement. “Notably, the male who looks directly at the camera shares physical similarities with Knezevich. At after 10:30 p.m., the male is seen departing the elevator with what looks to be a suitcase.”
Ana’s loved ones reported her missing shortly after she was last seen since she did not show up for a scheduled trip with pals to Barcelona. On February 4, Spanish firefighters arrived at Ana’s residence but she was nowhere to be located.
David Knezevich, 36, was arrested at Miami International Airport on Monday by Policía Nacional, the Spanish international police, in connection with his wife’s disappearance. Her friend from Florida, Sanna Rameau, previously told Fox News Digital that she received a bizarre text from Ana on February 3, leading her to believe her buddy was “taken against her will.”
“I met someone wonderful!” A translated version of the WhatsApp message that was sent in Spanish says. “He owns a holiday property approximately two [hours] from Madrid. We are on our way there today, and I plan to spend a few days there. The signal is patchy. I will call you when I come back.” A second message to Rameau reads: “After therapy yesterday, I needed a walk, and he approached me on the street!” Amazing connection. “Like I’ve never had before.”
The FBI discovered during their investigation that a Colombian woman who met David on a dating app received a WhatsApp message from him on February 3 asking him to translate the same sentences Ana sent to Sanna from English to “perfect Colombian,” telling her he had a writer friend in Serbia who was “writing a script about a Colombian character,” according to the FBI agent.
During their conversations, the Colombian woman mentioned David to her mother, who then looked up his name on Google. The Colombian woman saw a news item including a message allegedly from David Knezevich’s wife, which matched the identical phrasing of the text she and David Knezevich had created on February 3, 2023.
Law authorities also discovered that David rented a car in Serbia, his home country, in January and drove it to Spain until he returned in March. According to the complaint, Spanish law enforcement investigators were able to identify the brand of spray paint David allegedly used to black out the security cameras in Ana’s building and obtain footage of a guy who looks to be Knezevich purchasing the spray paint from a store in Madrid.
In March, a lady claiming to be Ana called an insurance company to terminate her insurance policies, which she had through the firm she co-owned with David. They jointly owned an IT company and real properties in South Florida. The next month, one of David’s workers admitted that she impersonated the victim at David’s instruction to open a new bank account in Ana’s name with Ana’s Social Security number.
David and Ana were going through a bitter divorce, and law enforcement claims David did not want to distribute assets equally with Ana. Ken Padowitz, David’s attorney, indicated he was not making any statements at the time of publishing.
