Team GB hero who sacrificed victory for viral family moment retires after stunning career including two Olympic golds

Alistair Brownlee, a double Olympic champion, has retired.

The 36-year-old Brownlee won gold in triathlons in Rio 2016 and London 2012.

However, in order to end his remarkable career, the veteran has made the decision to hang up his goggles, bike, and trainers.

On Thursday morning, Brownlee confirmed that he had reached the finish of his race with an emotional statement.

“It is time to close this chapter,” the Yorkshireman wrote.

“I approach this milestone, which signifies my departure from professional triathlon, with equal parts enthusiasm and trepidation.

“My life has been greatly influenced by triathlon; I have devoted almost half of it to becoming a professional athlete, realizing my boyhood ambition and doing much more than I could have ever dreamed.

“Why at this time? It feels natural. I am comfortable and joyful, looking forward to the future. Instead of grieving because it’s over, I find myself grinning because it happened (to paraphrase Dr. Seuss).

“I’m excited to adopt a slightly slower, but not too sluggish, pace of life. A wide range of thrilling activities, obstacles, and experiences await me—things I’ve always wanted to try but haven’t had the opportunity to do so.

“Sport has always been an exploratory personal journey for me, and I’m eager to take on some new challenges. Please feel free to leave recommendations below.

“First, I want to express my gratitude to a lot of amazing people and enjoy some well-earned rest.

“I’ll talk more about my career and the amazing people who have supported me along the way in the upcoming months. I’ll also talk about the exciting new challenges and projects I can’t wait to take on.

“Regardless of how minor you may think your efforts are, I sincerely appreciate each and every one of you. I am so grateful for your support. You have my sincerest gratitude.”
