Thousands of vehicles to be banned from US roads by 2027 over car tech fears as crackdown continues

A new law could soon cause certain cars to be removed off US roads.

Due to national security concerns, the departing Biden administration is prohibiting automobiles that contain technology and software owned by China and Russia.

Automakers with strong ties to China or Russia would not be allowed to sell new cars in the US under the new regulation, which was finalized on Tuesday.

The action comes after the Commerce Department reviewed the matter for months and concluded that technology based in China and Russia constituted a serious security danger to the United States.

“Cars today aren’t just steel on wheels, they’re computers,” stated Gina Raimondo, the secretary of commerce for the United States.

“With features like cameras, microphones, GPS tracking, and internet connectivity, modern cars are susceptible to abuse.

“This is a targeted approach to ensure we keep PRC- and Russian-manufactured technologies off American roads,” she stated.

For passenger vehicles weighing less than 10,000 pounds, the new regulation is applicable.

Model Year 2027 is when the software-related restriction goes into effect.

Model Year 2030 automobiles will be subject to hardware limitations.

Trucks and other vehicles are anticipated to be affected by a different regulation.

But automakers will have to pay for it.

US-made automobiles with any kind of substantial connection to China or Russia will be banned.

This implies that BYD, the massive Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, may be affected.

Lael Brainard, the national economic advisor, cautioned that Americans may be at risk of sensitive data being misused by Chinese automobiles.

According to Brainard, China is attempting to control the car industry’s destiny.

The ruling reflects growing concerns about American security as cars become more technologically dependent and networked.

This is a focused strategy to guarantee that Russian and PRC-made technologies remain off American highways.

Only a few months after Ford’s CEO disclosed that he drove a Chinese vehicle, the new regulation was announced.

Jim Farley disclosed that he has been driving the Xiaomi SU7 during an episode of the Fully Charged Podcast.

Farley praised the EV, which was manufactured by the Chinese tech company Xiaomi.
