Tragedy as spectator killed after being struck by hammer throw as he tried to protect wife and son
Tragically, a spectator was killed after being unintentionally hit by a hammer that an athlete threw.
The event on Sunday, which took place during a tournament at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs campus, claimed the man’s life.
The individual has been identified as Wade Langston by the El Paso County Coroner’s office.
According to reports, the 57-year-old, who was the father of one of the participants, passed away while attempting to defend his wife and son.
He was allegedly protecting his family when he was attacked by a hammer that weighed up to 7.26 kg (1st 2 lb).
Langston was declared deceased at the scene after receiving medical attention from first responders.

According to a University official, the hammer had struck him after passing through the “certified barriers.”
An off-target throw that swerved off course to clear a 12-foot net was reported by a witness to the Daily Mail.
“It was horrifying how much blood there was,” one added.
“I’m incensed at UCCS’s ineptitude and negligence, and I’m sad for the family.
“I saw someone die today and it was completely unnecessary.”
Jennifer Sobanet, chancellor of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, issued a brief statement.
She continued: “We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved.”
“Non-criminal” is how the Colorado Springs Police Department describes the occurrence.
The remaining tournament was canceled, and the organizers are unsure if a new date will be set.
In addition, the Colorado United Track Club issued a statement expressing their sympathies to Langston’s family.
It said: “The Langston family is grieving the death of Wade Langston, and the Colorado United Track Club, coaches, and assistants would like to offer our sincere condolences to them.
“Please know that our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with this family, and they are not alone in their grief.”
