Tragic Weekend on South Carolina Roads: Four Motorcyclists Killed in Separate Crashes

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, at least four people died over the weekend when their motorcycles crashed.

According to the Highway Patrol, four fatal crashes occurred on South Carolina roads over 56 hours. The Highway Patrol claimed that three of the fatal crashes involved motorbikes colliding with other vehicles.

Newberry County collision

Master Trooper Brandon Bolt said that one of the multi-vehicle incidents occurred in Newberry County.

According to Bolt, around 4:45 a.m. on Friday, a 2009 Suzuki was going north on U.S. 176 when it collided with a 2002 Dodge SUV that had turned left onto the road from Church Street. The motorcycle rider, the only one on the Suzuki, was murdered, while the SUV driver was unharmed, according to Bolt.

The Newberry County Coroner’s Office has not publicly recognized the motorbike rider. Officials did not indicate whether the motorbike rider wore a helmet.

Greenwood County collision

Another fatal crash occurred on a Midlands route Friday night.

According to Cpl. David Jones, the crash occurred around 11 p.m. in Greenwood County. A 2003 Harley-Davidson motorbike and a 2005 Honda Accord were traveling east on S.C. 246 when the car did a U-turn and the two vehicles crashed, Jones said.

The motorbike rider was brought to a nearby hospital and ultimately died, according to Jones.

The Greenwood County Coroner’s Office identified the motorbike rider as 56-year-old Stanley Marion Bell and blunt force trauma was the cause of death for the Ninety Six resident. There was no information on whether Bell was wearing a helmet.

Jones stated that the automobile driver was not injured, and no further injuries were reported.

Kershaw County collision

There was another fatal motorbike accident early Saturday morning.

According to Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover, the wreck occurred around 6 a.m. on S.C. 903/McBee Highway in Kershaw County.

Kershaw County Coroner David West said a guy was driving a 1991 Honda to Bike Week in Myrtle Beach when the motorbike went off the road and fell into a culvert, killing him.

Tully Tillman, a 37-year-old Indian Land resident who was traveling alone, was transferred to a nearby hospital and died, according to West.

Tillman was wearing a helmet, West stated.

Spartanburg County crash

Another deadly accident occurred on Sunday in the Upstate region.

According to Master Trooper William Bennett, a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle collided with a 2023 GMC SUV on US 221 in Spartanburg County around 1:40 p.m.

According to Bennett, the SUV was going east on Davis Trading Post Road when it turned left onto U.S. 221 and struck the northbound motorcycle.

According to Bennett, the Suzuki rider, who was the only person on the motorcycle, was transported to a local hospital and ultimately died.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office has not officially identified the motorbike rider. The SUV driver was also injured and sent to the same hospital, Bennett added. More information about the SUV driver’s condition was not provided.

There was no indication of whether the motorbike rider was wearing a helmet. The Highway Patrol continues to investigate all of the crashes.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, 306 individuals died on South Carolina roads in 2024 as of last Thursday, 31 of them were riding motorcycles.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, 1,030 people died in collisions last year, with 124 of them riding motorbikes.
