Trump deportations: Immigrants concerned after ICE spotted in Southwest Detroit, city councilwoman says
Deporting unauthorized immigrants was the subject of one of President Trump’s first executive actions. A municipal councilwoman from Detroit is now alerting people to the presence of immigration agents in Southwest Detroit.
DETROIT (FOX 2):Following President Donald Trump’s announcement of intentions for mass deportations, some people are uneasy about the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in a region with a large Hispanic immigrant population.
ICE in Detroit
We know:
Gabriela Santiago-Romero, a councilwoman for the city of Detroit, said she found out on Tuesday that ICE agents had been observed in Southwest Detroit. She was provided a video that showed agents outside a nearby residence.
The councilwoman remarked, “We see people taking videos of ICE on Vernor, Michigan Avenue, and they’re afraid.”
According to Santiago-Romero, ICE was not there when she visited the home in the video. She is now concentrating on recording these incidents in order to inform members of Congress.
Detroit Police Interim Chief Todd Bettison has been contacted, she added, to “ensure that Detroit police will not be working with ICE for any immigration raids.”
In a reversal of ICE and CBP’s ten-year-old rules, President Donald Trump has removed long-standing limitations on migrant arrests at sensitive sites like churches and schools.
She added that people and business owners in Detroit are inquiring as to whether raids are to be expected. According to Santiago-Romero, she is telling individuals no, but she also wants them to be aware of their rights in the event that they come into contact with ICE.
“You have the right to refuse ICE entry if you lack documentation. They have to present you with a warrant. A judge’s signature is required,” she stated.
Before answering any questions, individuals who stop by ICE while outside their residences have the right to inform the agents that they would like to talk with their attorney, Santiago-Romero continued.
What is unknown to us:
Why ICE agents were spotted at a residence in Southwest Detroit this week is unknown.
Santiago-Romero did see that ICE officers are frequently on patrol in the area due to its closeness to the Canadian border.
She is asking local residents to be aware of their rights and to be ready as she seeks additional information.
ICE has been contacted by FOX 2 to provide details about the local agents. We’re waiting on a reply.
Trump’s immigration plans
The backstory
This week, Trump signed a number of executive orders, including those pertaining to immigration, after assuming office for a second term. The president has stated that in order to protect Americans, such measures are required.
“Our southern border is overrun by cartels, criminal gangs, known terrorists, human traffickers, smugglers, unvetted military-age males from foreign adversaries, and illicit narcotics that harm Americans, including America,” the president wrote in an order announcing the emergency at the southern border.
According to his statements, the president intends to carry out the “largest deportation program in American history.”
“A national emergency will be proclaimed along our southern border. During his inauguration speech on Monday, Trump declared, “We will immediately stop all illegal entry and start the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places where they came from.”
As the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump gives his second Inaugural Address.
Overview:
The appearance of ICE personnel in major cities like Detroit and Chicago has alarmed some, but it is unclear how Trump intends to carry out large deportations.
The Revcom Corps for the Emancipation of Humanity is a group based in Chicago. On Tuesday, people in Chicago came together to protest raids and deportations that target unauthorized immigrants.
Following his inauguration on Monday, Trump fulfilled his election pledge to crack down on immigration by signing a number of executive actions on border security.
Border czar Tom Homan revealed that ICE is conducting mass deportations nationwide in an interview with FOX News.
“There has to be consequences for violating our laws,” he stated.
