Tunnel manhunt after two assault rifle-wielding gunmen open fire at Belgian train station & escape into underground

Several armed men were seen on the Brussels metro, sparking a manhunt in Belgium.

Shots were fired in front of the Cl menceau station in Anderlecht, in the west of the city, around 6:15 a.m. local time, prompting police to search for a group of males.

At the station’s entrance and inside, two highly hooded individuals in balaclavas with what appeared to be Kalashnikovs were visible in CCTV footage that RTBF was able to get.

According to Brussels Police, they are searching for “a small group of people, probably two or three individuals.”

Two men are seen casually pacing the station’s entrance while brandishing their weapons as commuters pass by in video captured from a building outside the station.

Bystanders fled into the station as they began fire at an unidentified target.

Before the two dash through the barricades and into the station, one hangs back while a man in a grey sweatshirt runs forward while firing.

No one was hurt, according to Brussels Police, and the station and a number of others have been evacuated.

Investigators outside the station have collected a number of gunshot casings.

The suspects are thought to have escaped into the subterranean tunnels leading to the South Station Metro Station, and authorities are still searching for them.

Numerous transportation links are being suspended while mass searches are conducted in the metro tunnels between the Tr ne and Gare de l’Ouest stations.

Metro travel on lines 2 and 6 was halted at 6:30 local time, and the “Constitution” tunnel next to the Gare du Midi was also shut down.

The Brussels-Midi station, which serves as the Eurostar train terminal, has also been shut down.

Searches for the men may take many hours, officials have warned.

At the town hall in Anderlecht, a makeshift police command center has been established.

According to local accounts, the incident is thought to have anything to do with drug trafficking.

According to Brussels Police spokeswoman Sarah Frederickx, the search is being conducted by both federal and local railway police.

The spokeswoman went on to say that because of the firearms that are allegedly still in the suspects’ possession, investigators would need to exercise caution.

“We don’t want to take any unnecessary chances because they might still be armed,” she stated.

“We recognize that this is a significant action done at a challenging moment.

“We will reopen the tunnels as quickly as possible.”

The event involving the city’s public transportation provider, MIVB, has affected thousands of commuters and raised concerns that may last for a long time.

“South Station is the busiest station on the network, and many commuters arrive there by train and take the metro,” a representative stated.

“This has had a significant influence. We have no idea how long it will last.
