Unveiling the Haunting Tales of Oklahoma’s ‘CRY BABY BRIDGE’!
The scary story of “Cry Baby Bridge” is one of the most well-known urban legends or ghost stories, not just in Oklahoma but across the country. It seems like every town in every state has a “Cry Baby Bridge.” I’m sure you’ve heard this story before. In fact, some towns have more than one!
‘Cry Baby Bridge‘ has a pretty much the same plot no matter what town or state it is in. When the story is told again, only a few details are changed or added. Of course, sometimes the story is about a terrible accident, other times it’s about suicide, and still other times it’s about murder and pure evil.
Of course, every town and state in the U.S. says it has the first and only “Cry Baby Bridge.” Oklahoma is no exception. But this urban tale is true everywhere in the U.S. Any old bridge that looks creepy and like it might be abandoned and scary is quickly called “Cry Baby Bridge.”
Okay, so what are some stories that have been told over the years? What kinds of hauntings and strange things have people said they’ve seen? Some people have said that they can hear a baby crying when they go to visit at night. Some people have said they not only heard the baby but also saw the ghost of its mother running around desperately looking for her child. It ranged from hearing strange noises and seeing ghosts to being attacked by angry, lost souls.
One account of the story says that a mother was driving when she crashed her car on the bridge, and her baby was thrown out. She looked all over for her kid but couldn’t find them. Later, when she was really sad, the mother went back to the bridge and killed herself. Another story is about a mother who was sad because she had just lost her husband and chose to kill herself and her baby by jumping off the bridge and drowning.
Some versions are much darker and talk about a mother and child who were riding in a wagon pulled by horses that flipped over. The mother couldn’t find her baby, just like in the car accident, and she killed herself by hanging from the bridge. In some stories, moms are so cruel that they kill their unwanted children, even babies, by throwing them off a bridge. That looks so dark and crazy.
In my Northern Oklahoma Cry Baby Bridge story, a group of women were being chased by thieves or bad guys. They hid under the bridge because they were afraid of what might happen. So that everyone else would be safe, the mother smothered one of the kids who wouldn’t stop making noise. Feeling guilty, she went back to the bridge later, but she was dead.
There’s no way to know when and where this urban tale began, let alone what state and town it came from. Over 100 or so “Cry Baby Bridges” can be found all over the United States. The story is told all over the country. People have been telling this ghost story for years and years.
