Utah Rape Case Suspect’s Alleged Past, Montana Family Claims Prior Harmful Incidents
(Salt Lake City) — When the Montana family learned of Ashley Vigil’s story, they made the long drive to Utah to testify, claiming that Brian Urban would have been prevented had their requests for assistance been granted.
Urban received the harshest penalty permitted by Utah law after being found guilty on five charges of rape and forced sexual assault in Utah. Ashley Vigil was raped by him on multiple occasions.
Following his arrest, in March 2024, she passed away.
Many turned up in front of the West Jordan Third District Court on the day of Urban’s sentence. They came together in Ashley’s favor.
“We’re here for who? They yelled, “Ashley,” and crowded into a crowded courtroom.
One mother, Paula S., traveled from Montana to attend the event; she wishes to keep her last name private. In the 1990s, she claimed to have met Brian Urban.
“We moved to Iowa in ’96, and then we got married that following spring,” she stated.
Kaeden was Paula S. and Brian’s son. While relocating multiple times to different locations, they also looked after her two daughters, Kyrsten and Alysa.
With time, she said, things began to alter.
It was all verbal at first, and he was quite domineering. Paula S. remarked, “He wasn’t fond of the way I was parenting the kids.
She continued by saying that over time, his actions got worse.
She responded, “He would push me.” “The last time he stood up behind me, he wrapped one arm around my neck and my head with the other. I just said, “Do it,” and he said he could have broken my neck. End my suffering, please. I’m out of time to complete this.”
He was detained in Wyoming and found guilty of strangulation, according to police and court documents. He was given a three-year probationary sentence with rules and regulations that he had to follow.

When Urban came home from work, Kyrsten, Paula S.’s daughter, recalled hearing his truck pull into the driveway.
She said that during her early years, he had sexually abused her.
She stated, “Brian touched my breasts on numerous occasions.” There was a time when I woke up and Brian was between my legs. Until I moved out at age 19, it didn’t stop.”
Alysa, her sister, described a similar upbringing.
She remarked, “Throughout our entire childhood, Brian muddied a lot of the water.”
Paula S. stated that her daughters had to tell her as adults what had occurred to them before she knew.
According to Kyrsten, “He played all three of us.” “I had the feeling that if it was occurring to me, it wasn’t happening to her. He would threaten to harm your mother if you spoke up.”

Kyrsten and Alysa both reported what occurred to them during their childhood, according to Rock Springs, Wyoming police. 2014 saw Kyrsten’s report, while 2017 saw Alysa’s report.
“In 2017, I eventually came forward and told my husband about what had happened to me,” Alysa stated in her filing. “We have been unable to contact Mr. Urban for months on end; he refuses to answer the phone and won’t answer the door when we arrive at the house.”
Urban was not prosecuted by the prosecutors after Rock Springs police indicated they had looked into both incidents and forwarded them to them.
After parting ways with Paula S. at the beginning of 2014, Urban met Paula Vigil and Ashley in Utah later that year.
Ashley, Urban’s stepdaughter, would later endure multiple rapes by him. After being captured on a nanny video, he was taken into custody, prosecuted, and found guilty.
“He will sit in prison, aware that he is unimportant to anyone,” Alysa remarked.
Still, her family wished that things had gone differently.
“This would never have happened to Ashley and her family if things had been handled properly,” Kyrsten stated.
