Washington Commanders make final decision over changing team name back after NFL backlash

OWNER Josh Harris has made it clear that the Washington Commanders will either rename themselves or not.

After the long-standing “Redskins” moniker and logo caused controversy, the three-time Super Bowl champions changed their identity in 2022.

When the Native American community’s criticism sparked discussion both inside and beyond the NFL, the team decided to alter its name.

Although many supporters pushed Washington to stick with the “Redskins” moniker, there was growing momentum for a change.

Additionally, team executives changed the name to just the Washington Football Team in the summer of 2020.

They then contemplated adopting that as the new, permanent name; Commanders, Armada, Presidents, Brigade, Red Hogs, RedWolves, and Defenders were among the other candidates.

Commanders were picked fast, and Harris, the main owner, inherited it in 2023 when his group acquired Dan Snyder.

The 60-year-old has already stated his opinion on the name. He is also a managing partner of the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA.

He stated: I believe that our team, culture, and coaching staff are now supporting it, so we’re moving forward with that.

The name Commanders has a meaning in this building.

It’s about football players that are passionate, skilled, mentally tough, and excellent teammates.

“It s really meaningful that that name is growing in meaning.”

Harris has, however, also hinted that the Commanders may yet use alternative means to travel back in time.

Since the term “Redskins” still stirs up controversy, it is unlikely to be a part of any changes.

However, Harris went on to say: “You’re going to see us head back towards honoring our past and bringing it together with our future.” “As far as rebranding and bringing (back) our past, which obviously I grew up with, and all the Super Bowl championships and our future together.”

Anyway, the atmosphere at the Washington camp is generally positive.

This is because, although losing to the Philadelphia Eagles 55-23, few predicted that the Commanders would make it to the NFC Championship Game during quarterback Jayden Daniels’ rookie season.

In the first season of their tenure at Northwest Stadium, general manager Adam Peters and coach Dan Quinn benefited greatly from Washington’s accomplishment.
