Netflix will soon release a TRUE narrative featuring a number of well-known characters that is based on the first and only unit of color in the US Women’s Army Corps.

The new Netflix movie, which stars Oprah Winfrey and Kerry Washington, offers a glimpse into life during World War II.

What is The Six Triple Eight about?

More than 850 ladies from the 6888th Central Postal Directory were sent to Europe in February 1945.

During this period, the only Women’s Army Corps unit of color stationed in Europe was the 6888th Central Postal Directory.

The movie tells the true story of 855 women who were instrumental in making sure their fellow soldiers got mail from their loved ones back home.

In just six months, the 6888th Central Postal Directory had to filter through almost 17 million pieces of mail, many of which were incomplete or incorrectly tagged.

The unit was assigned to “segregated housing and relegated to poorly maintained buildings often lacking light and heat,” in addition to the nearly impossible task at hand.

The 6888th Central Postal Directory sent the post to the front lines in just ninety days, despite the circumstances and anxiety they encountered.

Speaking about the upcoming Netflix movie, writer and director Tyler Perry described how he met a former battalion member, Lena Derriecott King, who died in January 2024 at the age of 100, and was motivated to adapt the true narrative for the big screen.

“We sat in her house for a couple of hours just talking, having a great conversation,” Perry stated in an homage to Lena Derriecott King.

“And I had a whole movie in my head that I wanted to write for her when I left.”

Perry was able to show King an unfinished version of the movie before she died.

Later this month, the finished version will be shown on screens.

How to watch The Six Triple Eight on Netflix

Netflix will begin streaming The Six Triple Eight on December 20, 2024.

Additionally, starting on December 6, 2024, it will be screened in a few theaters.

Producer Nicole Avant gave an inside look at the casting process, describing how Kerry Washington was chosen to play Major Charity Adams.

“Kerry was always my first choice,” Avant stated. She is incredibly powerful, self-assured, compassionate, and understanding.

“She always wants to celebrate the story of an underdog and respects and honors women of color throughout history.”

Oprah Winfrey, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Gregg Sulkin, and Sam Waterston are among the other celebrities in The Six Triple Eight cast, in addition to Kerry Washington.
