Whitmer says she’ll look to find ‘common ground’ with Trump
The governor was asked if she was attempting to reconcile with Trump during this year-end WKAR Public Television interview at the executive home.
LANSING (FOX 2):Despite their past heated arguments, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is now trying to improve her working relationship with the president-elect.
Whitmer and then-President Trump had a significant and highly visible disagreement about how to address the COVID pandemic that swept through Michigan and the country.
From then until now, the political rivalry has been simmering there.
The governor was asked if she was attempting to reconcile with Trump during a year-end WKAR Public Television interview at the executive house.
“That is how I feel,” Whitmer remarked. “I took an oath of office to the people of Michigan.”
For the first time, the governor disclosed that she had sent the president-elect this message of peace offering through back channels as he gets ready to return to the White House.
Whitmer did not initially confirm this.
Whitmer: Would it? “If I told you about it, would it still be a back channel signal Tim?”
Skubick : “Well I guess that is a yes to my question.”Other Democratic governors, like J.B. Pritzker of Illinois and Gavin Newsom of California, have joined forces to oppose the incoming president.
Democratic governors have not supported the deportation of migrants using their state police. Whitmer never responded when the governor was posed that question.
Due to another mission, the governor of Michigan declined to join the group.
“My job is to work with him and I am going to do everything I can, to find common ground,” Whitmer stated. “I understand there will be areas when we won’t be able to find common ground, but I’m hopeful that there are many where we can.”
And despite her brief hesitation, she acknowledged that Skubick’s prediction that this back channel news will be reported was accurate.
“Yes,” Whitmer nodded her head in agreement.
Skubick: “Thank you, Governor. Why did you hesitate?
“I was thinking whether to say maybe or yes, but I said yes,” Whitmer stated.
What does Mr. Trump do? is the question.
