Who is Dan Rather?
Born on October 31, 1931, in Wharton, Texas, Dan Rather is a journalist.
Rather graduated with a journalism degree from Sam Houston State University in 1953.
Before joining the United Press, Rather started his media career as a student and worked for the Associated Press.
When the Texas native started working as a TV broadcaster for ABC affiliate KTRK-TV in 1959, he advanced his career.

He relocated to KHOU-TV, a CBS affiliate, the next year, where his broadcasting career took off.
His coverage of Hurricane Carla in 1961 featured the first-ever televised display of a hurricane’s radar image.
Rather joined the CBS News Southwest Bureau the next year. From 1975 to 1981, he was a well-known correspondent for 60 Minutes.
He later spent 24 years as an anchor for CBS Evening News.
When his contract was up for renewal in June 2006, he was fired by the network.
He sued CBS for $70 million in 2007 on the grounds that he was used as the “scapegoat” for the Killian scandal in 2004.

“I have a lot of flaws and a lot of vulnerabilities,” Rather remarked in reflection of his departure from The Hollywood Reporter.
“I have committed numerous errors. Many of my wounds are self-inflicted, and some are still partially open. However, I’m a warrior.
Rather persisted in his career after being fired, finally landing his own show on AXS TV called Dan Rather Reports, which was later renamed The Big Interview with Dan Rather.
It was announced in April 2024 that Rather would do another interview with CBS News, eighteen years after leaving.

Rather and his wife, Jean, had two children at the start of his career.
In Austin, Texas, their daughter Robin became an environmentalist.
She established Collective Strength, a sustainability-related organization with headquarters in Texas.

The couple’s son, Danjack, chose to work in public service and law enforcement.
He has almost 30 years of experience as an assistant district attorney in New York City.

Rather talked about having to say the “toughest” goodbyes to his wife and children when he had to leave for assignments in an interview with People.

He talked about needing to complete a task while Russia was in Afghanistan and not knowing if he would survive.
However, we had a plan for me to lead a small squad into Afghanistan after the Russian invasion in 1980. We were informed that we would not likely be able to enter, but that if we did, we would not survive.
“I had a heart-to-heart conversation about it with Jean. ‘Dad, you’ve been through a lot, but we have a horrible feeling about this one,’ my daughter, who is my oldest kid, remarked to me when she pulled me aside. We believe that if you leave, you might not return.
“In terms of leaving, that was probably the toughest leave that I made.”
Who was Dan Rather’s wife, Jean?
From 1957 until her passing in November 2024, Rather was wed to Jean Grace Goebel.
On November 26, friends of the family posted on Dan’s Facebook page that she had died at the age of 89 after a fight with cancer.
It said: “Dan and the entire Rather family are having the darkest day ever today.
“Dan’s wife, Jean Rather, died early this morning at their Austin, Texas, home.
Jean, Rather’s wife of 67 years, “had been on hospice care for some time, but the news still comes as a shock for those of us who knew and loved her,” the statement continued.
“Please keep the Rathers in your thoughts,” the statement added. As a genuine Texan, Jean led a full life as an amazing wife, mother, friend, and artist.
Jean worked as an artist for years, but Rather was a journalist for the majority of his life.
Jean held a variety of professions before to discovering her love for art, including a secretarial job where she first met her husband.
Rather claimed in a 2020 interview with Closer Weekly that it was “love at first sight” when he first met Jean.

“She came to work as a secretarial while I was employed at KTRH radio in Houston. He told the newspaper, “For me, it was love at first sight.
It took me a long time to persuade her to marry me, but she was not only incredibly smart but also very attractive. There’s no secret about that, in my opinion.
