Kidnapping

On April 12, 1993, Anabel Segura was abducted while out on a morning run in La Moraleja, a wealthy neighborhood of Madrid, Spain.

Felisa Garcia’s involvement

Felisa Garcia took part in a dark plot hatched by her husband Mu ño Guadix and his accomplice Ortiz Aon three months after Anabel was abducted.

In an audio tape delivered to the victim’s family, she consented to play Anabel.

Garia, posing as the missing 22-year-old, said she was “OK” and begged to be taken home safely on this film.

“Hello, Mom and Dad. It’s June 22nd,” she said. I just wanted to let you know that, overall, I’m fine.

“They’re not mistreating me, but I miss you all a lot and I truly want to be at home with you.

The recording also included a terrifying threat: We will have her put to death 30 days after receiving this tape if all of our demands are not fulfilled in the ransom delivery.

“I reiterate: she will be put to death if the requests are not fulfilled.

Her father, Jos Segura N. Jerawasn, wasn’t convinced, but the family held onto the hope that Anabel was still alive.

Jaime Barrado, the head of the national police’s kidnapping unit, stated: “That’s not Anabel” was the first thing Jos said after hearing the recording, without allowing his wife, who was crying at the time, to speak.

The deceit enabled the kidnappers to continue their attempts to extract money from the family, despite the fact that Anabel was already dead.

The abductors allegedly sought up to 150 million pesetas ($2 million) from Anabel’s family over 14 calls between 1993 and 1995.

Anabel’s parents mortgaged their house to collect money for the ransom and to provide their own reward for information that might lead to Anabel’s safe return.

Additionally, the Spanish Interior Ministry provided a reward.

Within two days, Anabel’s parents prepared the ransom money, but it was never retrieved.

After that, the kidnappers stopped talking, and months went by with no updates.

When police made the kidnapper’s voice available to the media in November 1993, more than 30,000 calls were received; 1,600 of those calls were considered genuine.

No arrests had been made by April 1995, the second anniversary of her captivity.

“Anabel’s parents are not driven by hatred, but they want the full force of the law and justice against the kidnappers and killers of Anabel,” the Segura family lawyer stated during a press conference on the day after Anabel’s remains were discovered.

Convictions

Garcia was held legally responsible for her involvement in the crime when the truth was eventually revealed in 1995.

She was accused of posing as Anabel on the tape and concealing the kidnapping.

Garcia was given a six-month prison sentence in 1999 for her involvement in the fraud.

The Spanish Supreme Court sentenced Ortiz Aon and Mu ez Guadix to 43 years in prison each for their roles in the kidnapping and murder.

Ortiz Aon passed away in prison in 2009 at the age of 48.

However, on November 27, 2013, Mu oz Guadix was made public after the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rendered a decision that had an impact on how Spain’s Parot doctrine was used.

A 2006 Spanish court decision known as the Parot doctrine altered the way that severe offenders were sentenced to jail.

It essentially extended prison time by applying sentence reductions to specific crimes rather than the total sentence.

In 2013, this contentious practice was discontinued after being found to be a violation of human rights, which resulted in Mu oz Guadix’s release.
